LAMENTATION Whining and lamentation are as useless in foro divino as they are in foro humano.
LE.
LANGUAGE In spite of the great wealth of our languages, a thoughtful mind is often at a loss for an expression that should square exactly with its concept; and for want of which he cannot make himself altogether intelligible, either to others or to himself. To coin new words is to arrogate to oneself legislative power in matters of language. It is always advisable to look about, in dead and learned languages, whether they do not contain such a concept and its adequate expression. Even if it should happen that the original meaning of the word had become somewhat uncertain, it is better nevertheless to determine and fix the meaning which principally belonged to it, than to spoil our labor by becoming unintelligible.
CPuR.
LATIN I have to apologize for the many Latin expressions which, contrary to good taste, have crept in instead of their native equivalents. My only excuse is, that I thought it better to sacrifice something of the elegance of language, rather than to throw any impediments in the way of real students, by the use of inaccurate and obscure expressions.
CPuR.
LAUGHING Laughing is masculine.
A.
LAW When a lawyer knows law historically only, he is rendered very unfit for a good judge, and utterly so for a legislator.
Logic.
Rules so far as they are objective, are called laws.
CPuR. Vide Rule.
Particular laws of nature are subject to more general laws.
CPuR.
LAW, HUMAN The law should be so sacred and inviolable that it is a crime to doubt it; therefore, it is represented as derived from a divine legislator.
MM.
LAWGIVER A man who propounds that a law which is in accordance with his will shall be binding on others, promulgates a law, and is a lawgiver.
LE.
LAW, INTERNATIONAL To establish right in war is the most difficult part of international law. How introduce a law in this lawless state without contradicting oneself?
MM.
LAWS OF NATURE Reason is always present, while laws of nature must usually be sought with labor.
PM.
LAWYER A lawyer might use deceptive arguments in order to exploit to his advantage the unwariness of his opponent.
CPuR.
Lawyers must regard the preservation of life as the highest duty, because the threat of death is their most powerful weapon in examining a man.
LE.
LAW OF MORALITY The law which has no other motive but to deserve to be happy, I call moral. It dictates how we ought to conduct ourselves in order to deserve happiness.
CPuR.
LAW OF NATURE Even laws of nature carry with them a character of necessity, and thus lead to the supposition that they rest on grounds which are valid before all experience.
CPuR.
The law of nature, that everything which happens has a cause ⦠is a law of the understanding, which can on no account be surrendered, and from which no single natural phenomenon can be exempted.
CPuR.
LAWSUIT We considered it advisable to write down the records of this lawsuit in full detail, and to deposit them in the archives of human reason.
CPuR.
LAZINESS Laziness reduces the degree of life.
